Thomas-Krenn.AG Open Source sponsorship 2013 Posted by : TheOne on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 - 01:31 AM
Press Releases The Thomas-Krenn.AG awards this year's Open Source sponsorship fifth price to Kanotix. The project achieves a hardware credit over 700 euro.

After Kanotix's successful first participation in the Open Source sponsorship program by Thomas-Krenn.AG during the LinuxTag 2011, I decided to fill a new application while LinuxTag 2013. Thomas-Krenn.AG in cooperation with Linuxhotel, NETWAYS and Univention chose Kanotix as one of many projects for this year's sponsorship.

In total the server manufacturer from Freyung supports Open Source projects with hardware credits over 6,500 euro. This year's first price of 2,500 euro goes to the project Skolelinux-DebianEdu. Other projects are CMS-Garden (1,500 euro), Rechenkraft.net (1,000 euro) and BeLUG (800 euro). Congratulations.

On behalf of the entire Kanotix project I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Thomas-Krenn.AG, Linuxhotel, NETWAYS and Univention for their commitment of sponsoring free projects.

Kanotix Dragonfire LinuxTag 2013 Posted by : TheOne on Thursday, May 23, 2013 - 02:30 PM
Release Notes Hello Kanotix Community,

I am proud to announce the release of Kanotix Dragonfire from LinuxTag 2013 in Berlin. Kanotix Dragonfire is based on the recently released Debian 7 (Wheezy).
Beside KDE as default desktop environment beginning with this release exists a lightweight alternative with LXDE as desktop environment.

In addition to that we offer a special image simular to CeBIT special. The main different is that it has preinstalled Steam client, a newer Mesa version (9.1.1+UVD), gfxdetect and a newer libc6 2.17 (from experimental – incompatible to Debian Wheezy).

KDE SC 4.8.4 respectively LXDE (Openbox or Compiz) with PCManFM 1.1.0
Iceweasel 21.0
Icedove 10.0.2 (KDE images only), sylpheed 3.2.0 (LXDE images only)
Pidgin 2.10.7
Kernel 3.9.0 (Ubuntu rebased 3.9.2) + UVD patches
Libre Office 4.0.3.3 (KDE images only)
Grub 2.00
Wine 1.5.29 (KDE images only)
AcritoxInstaller 0.2.33

In special version included gfxdetect is an advancement of gfxoverlays. The extra 3D graphics drivers from nvidia and AMD are already preinstalled. Depending on the detection of a graphics card hardware from NVIDIA (series 8 or newer) or AMD (HD 5000 or newer), the correct driver will be activated. That is very nice for installations on external harddisks.

All in all you can choose between these ISO images:

Kanotix CeBIT Special 2013 Posted by : Kano on Friday, March 08, 2013 - 06:47 AM
As a little surprise there is a new Kanotix ISO during CeBIT time (I am there as visitor) with some special features not found in normal releases. The main difference is that a newer libc6 2.17 is used (from Debian Experimental) which has the effect that self-compiled binaries can not be shared with Debian Wheezy users. If that does not affect you you can enjoy the new features:

* Kernel 3.8.2 (Ubuntu 3.8.0-10 with one extra patch and SATA_AHCI static)
* Nvidia 313.18 and Fglrx 13.2 Beta 7 available in gfxdetect mode (similar to Hellfire gfxoverlay) and the autodetection works after hd install in that mode as well
* Mesa 9.1 for open source gfx drivers, best suited for Intel HD 2000+
* Amarok 2.7.0
* Wine 1.5.25
* LibreOffice 4.0.0
* Grub 2.00 (in case of UEFI boot requires primary mbr or gpt partition mounted to /boot/efi, can be shared with Win, use adv. partitioning)
* Steam preinstalled
* Iceweasel 19

The system can be used to try Steam and should work fine even from USB hd installs (create a bit ext4 partition for that). You could carry your games with you that way and the gfx driver is always correct on boot.
