It never ceases to amaze me how much "bang for the buck" we can get now.
My first hard disk drive was a Seagate Full Height 5MB attached to a Western Digital Compatible Controller card using a custom EEPROM.
I was using an Apple when I decided I was tired of swapping floppies, and Apple wanted more for a 5MB hard drive than I could buy an entire "IBM Compatible" system for, including a 5MB hard drive with 10 times the RAM (640KB versus 64KB in the Apple).
So, I switched from Apple (they priced themselves out of the market from my perspetive).
I've still got that 5MB Seagate hard drive, and the last time I checked it (over a year ago now), it still fired up (although the bearings sounded like they were going to freeze up at any moment). lol
At the time, I couldn't imagine ever needing more than 5MB of disk space.
I'm somewhat of a "packrat", so I still have my first IBM Compatible PC. Although I did upgrade the 4.77mhz motherboard a speedy 8mhz "Turbo" board.
It'a also amazing how much Flash Memory you can get for very little money anymore.
I just got a new package a little while ago
It was a 1GB 40x Lexar CompactFlash Card I bought for $19.95 delivered (outpost.com was running a sale on them with free ground shippng and I got an order in before they sold out). I think I spent about 10 times that much around 6 years back for a Lexar 128mb CompactFlash Card (and it was a slower one, too).
