Has anybody been able to get an iPod to really truly be unmounted so that the iPod knows it's been umounted & stops w/ the "do not disconnect" message? I've crashed my ipod twice.
eject doesn't seem to work w/ an ipod. I'm flummoxed.
the iPod still shows up in /media after the pcs been rebooted & the iPod removed.
The ipod is /dev/sdc2 and /media/sdc2
I've tried umount and eject for each as the amaroK disconnect command. I tried umount and eject from konsole, as user and as root.
It unmounts as far as kanotix is concerned. eject does nothing, tho.
"safely remove" doesn't stop the iPod either, unmounts it as fas as the os is concerned, but not the iPod.
this problem only applies to the iPod; other storage devices eject and umount fine.
I'm all googled out & i'm still trying to revive the iPod.
Thanks!

if you'd a d-u, create a new link for deveices on desktop. let it point to /media/sdc2. set the permissions for root and users to r/w. Now you can safetly umount this device as a user and remove the ipod.

I don't have problems unmounting my ipod. First I "eject" it in amarok, then I use the kicker applet for storage media to finally unmount it. After that it either shows the ok sign or switches to the menu which for me is the same.

I'll see how ejecting, then unounting w/ the kicker works. I'm fine technically mounting or umounting as is, just getting the iPod to realise it's been done is another story. I did upgrade eject & thought I had the problem resolved, but that didn't do it in the end. I'm new to managing the iPod. Thanks. Appreciate you all responding to such a basic inquiry..

Tnx both, will try to reinstall eject, may be it causes some automounter the new access deneid with the hal/dbus prob.

This is what I do...

I plug in my ipod to the computer.
The IPOD unmounted icon appears on the desktop.
I right-click it and hit, "mount"

Then inside amarok, I hit "connect"

Do my thing, then hit "disconnect" from inside amarok.

On my desktop, I right-click the now mounted IPOD Icon, and hit "Safely Remove"

And if you don't want to mount the ipod and use the kde automounter which pops up asking what to do with the new device: add a new entry for the automounter "just mount it" or something like that, using the command "kio_media_mounthelper -m %u" and make it the default action.
