General Support - Splashy only half working...

I've posted here cos I'm not sure if it's a splashy issue or kanotix issue.
On boot, splashy appears then the background goes black after a second or two but the progress bar continues by itself.
If I press Esc at the point the background goes black there is this error -
Code:
set_kernel_font: invalid argument

It suggests on the splashy wiki to change autoverboseonerror to no in the splashy config but that didn't help.
I also saw a post on this forum that suggested purging and removing libdirectfb-0.9-25, which uninstalled a lot of other packages. After reinstalling everything the problem is still there.

All my boxes go black, I suppose. Or just those with nvidia-drivers? Actually, I really don't care and watch. If there is a problem I want text anyway and press ESC. Splashy is just mighty impressing at work. Just beaten by beryl. Mr. Green

If do not like splashy, use usplash instead. This is the Splash, which Ubuntu uses.

I tried usplash but that also failed to work, it said something about a directory not being found. I googled the error and followed various supposed fixes but nothing worked.
Besides, splashy is much easier to customize and I've spent so much time creating my own matching grub, splashy, kdm, ksplash and desktop themes that I just couldn't cope with a non matching boot splash. It's like wearing a suit with bright green socks.

<EDIT>
When I run /sbin/splashy test I get this error and the splash doesn't start -
Code:
FATAL: splashy_video.c <706>:
(#) DirectFBError [DirectFBCreate (&video->dfb)]: Initialization error!

So I'm not sure if the splashy problem is to do with that or the set_kernel_font thing.

bootsplash rocks!!, sorry Sehr glücklich

I agree. I compile my kernels for this reason alone (while there I tweak but that is what gets me going.)

hehe, you got to see that. yeah. I compile them, too.

I removed all traces of splashy and tried usplash again. I get this error every other line on boot
Code:
chdir: No such file or directory

When I do dpkg-reconfigure usplash I get this
Code:
/boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-kanotix-1 has been altered.  Cannot update.

The set_kernel_font error is now gone on boot but splashy still won't work properly.
This is the output of dmesg | grep fb
Code:
pcie_portdrv_probe->Dev[02fb:10de] has invalid IRQ. Check vendor BIOS
Now this goes way above my head but I do know my bios has no options for tweaking IRQ's.
Now, when I try booting the kanotix livecd splashy works fully and the splash goes all the way to the end of the boot process so I don't know what's gone wrong since the install.

Hi shame

I don't like splashy too und so I installed usplash, but it didn't worked too on my Kanotix RC-4 2006. I get the same error messages like you.

Would be nice to have a HOWTO (or even better a script) from hey_ian how to install usplash, because Ubuntu Splash is really great.

Thanks for help

Well I finally got splashy working properly after reading through as much documentation as I could (turned out it was in the readme)
Zitat:
(On Ubuntu and Debian) Change /etc/init.d/keymap.sh and /etc/init.d/console-screen.sh like:
#!/bin/sh
pidof splashy > /dev/null && exit 0

As for usplash I found a few articles relating to the errors I got but nothing fixed them.
I never really liked usplash on ubuntu that much though so it would be a last resort for me.

Titel: And can't get latest 0.2.1 splashy working at all
I had the same issue of splashy going black prematurely during boot-up, with splashy 0.1.8.1-3.1 that's used in RC4, and the edit to keymap.sh and console-screen.sh also fixes it for me. But after an upgrade gave me splashy 0.2.1, I had the known issue of the computer hanging at the end of the boot process and having to do Ctrl-Alt-F1/Alt-F7, which was worse, so I downgraded back to 0.1.8.1-3.1, from Debian snaphot of 2006/09/15. The only way I can get splashy 0.2.1 to work at all is to install 0.1.8.1 and then compile and install 0.2.1 (not install the deb package) without removing 0.1.8.1
