General Support - No boot signature

Titel: No boot signature
I wanted to try a different distro and installed Arch to hda4. I let it install grub with the intent of using the liveCD from Kanotix to restore it's mbr and then I would have the Arch menu.lst to copy from and put in Kanotix menu.lst. All went smooth and the computer booted to Arch. I opened the Kanotix liveCD and restored the Kanotix-bootmanager and restored the mbr using the Kanotix-installer. Now when I reboot I get the following message:

Zitat:
No boot signature in partition
DISKBOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

I have the following on my computer:
hda1 = Kanotix (2006-01-RC4)
hda2 = swap
hda3 = Kanotix (Easter rc)
hda4 = Arch

sda1 = NTFS for storage
sda2 = storage
sda3 = backups

Any help is appreciated.

Looks like you need to reinstall GRUB to the MBR (link goes to kanotix.com FAQ entry on GRUB with directions).

You could do that from the live CD, or, if you installed GRUB on one of your existing partitions, you could make and use a Smart BootManager floppy to boot from one of your existing partitions. (I'm not sure if Smart BootManager's included on the Kanotix live CD, but you can always install it if you've got enough RAM -- the package name is "sbm".)

<edit> Sorry, that last part wasn't clear. You could boot to one of your existing partitions using SBM and install GRUB from there.

eco2geek,

I still don't know what I did wrong but the system is back up. I missed the FAQ entry. I did a search on the forum first before I posted. Guess I should have looked harder at the FAQ. I had tried the liveCD install program and restored the mbr but I guess it didn't work. I tried the command line entry in console as explained in the FAQ and it worked. Now I just have to get the gui to start when I reboot.

Thank you very much for your help.

Let's see, in order to get the graphical GRUB menu going, check to see that you've got the "grub-gfxboot" and "kanotix-graphics" packages installed.

There should be a line in GRUB similar to:

gfxmenu (hd0,0)/boot/message

And there should be a /boot/message file that's a symlink to /boot/message.hd.

I didn't see anything like this but everything is back to where it was and working. Actually, it wasn't grub that I was having problems with. I couldn't get that far. When I rebooted I got the bios check and then the error message.

Thanks for your help.
