          Hi guys,

I've messed something up. When I try to open a folder in Konqueror, I get this message:

> There appears to be a configuration error. You

> have associated Konqueror with inode/directory,

> but it cannot handle this file type.

I tried this fix, which I found on a support site:

1. Control Center > File Associations > Inode > Directory > Embedding tab

2. Left Click Action: Use Settings for 'Inode' group

3. Apply

...but it didn't help. Ideas? Thanks. |

          | I can't open anything from the desktop with my normal (non-root) user account. When I left-click a mounted drive's icon, the error message appears (above), then an empty Konqueror window appears and gives me the same error when I try to use it. I can access folders and files only from a console prompt. (Yes, I know, many people think that's the best way to do it anyway!) |

BTW, I should have mentioned that I'm running 2.6.16.16-kanotix-1.

Zitat:
may be missing kde-base-data or kde-mime-link.

What are those? Packages? I couldn't find any package listings for them, or any other information.

Okay, I just did a full dist-upgrade. (To do so, I quit KDE and started a text session as root. I've seen many people refer to kano's kanotix-upgrade-gui script, but I couldn't find it anywhere. It wasn't on the script page here, and apt couldn't find it---even though the 2005-4 manual says to use apt to get it. Weird...)

The upgrade worked fine, as far as I can tell, but I still can't open any folders in KDE. Same error message.

Shall I just give up, create a new account, and trash this one? I thought there might be a simpler way.

Thanks, a. |

          | Never mind, everything's hosed... KDM wouldn't restart, got a bunch of error messages. Maybe it's because it's such a new system. Back to Mr. Gates I'm afraid. If I had more time to fuss with all this I would be glad to try... |

          For the kanotix-update-gui

You can add (copy & paste) this to your source list

# Loibl's Scripte

deb http://www.andreas-loibl.de/linux/debian/ ./

Which is located at

/etc/apt/sources.list (right click on the sources.list) > Action > Edit as Root (password) SAVE after you enter the new source

Open Konsole login as root (su or sux, password)

apt-get update

If you get a key error, copy and paste this

gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 3C9C56BDF781E713

hit enter, then copy and paste this

apt-key add /root/.gnupg/pubring.gpg

hit enter again

Then apt-get update again

apt-get install kanotix-update-gui

It will be located in K-menu > System > Kanotix-Update-GUI

For the mime problem

In kontrol KDE Components/File Associations, Expand application , if no entry for octet-stream Click on Add... , for Group select application and for Type Name fill in octet-stream

If nothing works I would start all over again with the latest version of Kanotix

but then again Linux is not for everyone and some might be better off using windows, there is always #kanotix on IRC to help with problems also |

You can expect some initial failures when you start with linux, there's a learning curve. Especially if you start with a debian sid based distro that will happily allow you to destroy it if you ask it to by saying or doing the wrong thing at the wrong time.

the best course for newer users is to get the latest version, install it, avoid dist-upgrades completely, avoid kernel upgrades, just run it until you get a feel for how to actually do the stuff.

There is a learning curve, and it's real. I had many failures on many systems before I had learned enough to start learning how to use something as powerful as kanotix. And even then the learning curve was steep the first few months as I encountered some fairly hard to resolve bugs along the way. Each bug you overcome however, unlike in windows, will dramatically increase your linux skill level.

I would currently only recommend something like kanotix to two types of users: someone who will never alter the initial install, keep same software, etc. and someone who is a pretty decently skilled computer user. |
