Hi I have encountered some very strange networking issues with the latest updates from Sid.
Essentially, even though I have removed everything DHCP related from my system that I can find, my Kanotix install has started serving me some very odd/nonsensical IP addresses.
Here is an example of what I have found:
lan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:13:8F:64:13:F3
inet addr:169.254.150.23 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
inet6 addr: fe80::213:8fff:fe64:13f3/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:276 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:1115 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:58267 (56.9 KiB) TX bytes:83671 (81.7 KiB)
Interrupt:7 Base address:0x4800
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:512 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:512 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:28544 (27.8 KiB) TX bytes:28544 (27.8 KiB)
:~$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
lan0 no wireless extensions.
firewire0 no wireless extensions.
sit0 no wireless extensions.
jebus197@linux1:~$ su
Password:
root@linux1:/home/jebus197# ifdown lan0 && ifup lan0
SIOCSIFADDR: File exists
Failed to bring up lan0.
root@linux1:/home/jebus197# ifdown lan0
ifdown: interface lan0 not configured
root@linux1:/home/jebus197 ifup lan0
root@linux1:/home/jebus197#
However my /etc/network/interfaces file is set out as follows:
# /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(, ifdown(
# The loopback interface
# automatically added when upgrading
auto lo eth0 eth1 lan0
iface lo inet loopback
iface lan1 inet static
address 192.168.1.107
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
wireless-mode Managed
wireless_key s:********
wireless-essid ********
iface lan0 inet static
address 192.168.1.108
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.2.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
To be clear I am not trying to set up wireless networking - wired networking is fine in this instance..
As you can see from the above if I start and stop the network via ifdonw and ifup it will give me a proper IP address.
However I am not even sure that my system is capable of supporting the random type addresses, as as far as I'm aware they are not even in the range of what my router is capable of.
Can anyone suggest what might be going on? |

maybe the network address causes a problem? |

Yeah I spotted that too and I changed it. I take it you mean the "2" in "192.168.2.0"?
Unfortunately even after changing this to 192.168.1.0, it is still serving me up the same very strange addresses.
I am not even sure my router is capable of serving addresses like this, so where the system is getting them is a mystery. |

Yeas, I meant this "2".
I have no further ideas how to solve this problem. My feeling (I have no proof for that) is, that because the problem came with an upgrade, you shouldn't look only to /etc/network/interfaces, but also have look on the used modules. |
