          | Hello All, Lost my internet connection after I deleted /tmp contents. Had to because it was overfilled and would not let me boot into my kanotix 2005-04.

I have a linksys router that is wired to my kanotix desktop. My laptop has mepis and connects wirelessly to the router and works fine. Obviously the router works .

I have 2 nics both worked before this. One is a realtek 8139 and the other is a Linksys NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet.
I have tried using netconfig to reconfigure, then dhclient but it does not connect to network.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

 Thank you,

 Marcia

          | Please boot your machine, open a shell and show us the output of:
 Code:
ifconfig -a
 AND

 Code:
ls -al /tmp
If you do it like this you can easily create a text file of the output:

 Code:
ifconfig -a> ifconfig.txt
 AND

 Code:
ls -al /tmp> tmp.txt
Also please paste here your complete /etc/network/interfaces file.

Since you don't have network I realize it makes it harder. I would suggest booting your hdd installed system, issue the commands and save the text files, then boot Kanotix live cd (or perhaps you dual boot w/ other OS) and you can access your hdd and post the contents of ifconfig.txt & tmp.txt & /etc/network/interfaces files here. Much easier and less error prone that typing it out.

          | marcia hat folgendes geschrieben::
lan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:26:C0:62:F3
 inet addr:192.168.1.100 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

 RX bytes:8364 (8.1 KiB) TX bytes:28620 (27.9 KiB)
 Interrupt:5 Base address:0xcc00

It looks as if lan0 has an i.p. address. Is this a wireless interface? Is this the interface you usually use? Can you ping your router? Something like:

 Code:
ping 192.168.1.0
If you can ping the router can you ping outside the LAN?

 Code:
ping yahoo.com

Your /etc/network/interfaces file has a typo in it.

 Zitat:
auto lo\iniface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

 iface eth1 inet dhcp

 iface lan0 inet dhcp

 iface lan1 inet dhcp

The first line does not seem correct. Is this the actual file or did you type it manually? It should read something like this:

 Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
 iface eth0 inet dhcp

 iface eth1 inet dhcp

 iface lan0 inet dhcp

 iface lan1 inet dhcp

I then fired up my browser and tried a website which tried for a long while to come up but did not come up.

Thanks for your help. I am sure it is something relatively simple.

No, this is not wireless for my kanotix desktop. It is hardwired to the router but my laptop is wireless and is working fine through the same router.

By the way, my router's address is 198.162.1.1 which when I ping says it is unreachable. When I ping yahoo.com I get unknown host.

 Thanks very much.

 Marcia

I then fired up my browser and tried a website which tried for a long while to come up but did not come up.

Thanks for your help. I am sure it is something relatively simple.

No, this is not wireless for my kanotix desktop. It is hardwired to the router but my laptop is wireless and is working fine through the same router.

By the way, my router's address is 198.162.1.1 which when I ping says it is unreachable. When I ping yahoo.com I get unknown host.

 Thanks very much.

 Marcia

          | Hello,
Sorry about the double post, that was unintended.

I am using my phone line now because I still have not resolved this issue. Still no cable internet on this kanotix desktop machine. I purchased a new compaq amd64 3800+ computer for my husband for xmas. It has winxp media center and connected wirelessly immediately to my linksys router. This machine is the only one not connecting out of three.

To recap, this connected fine until I deleted /tmp contents. Now, It will not. Should I do something entirely different with my interfaces file to make it work? I am a noob when it comes to networking since it usually just works.

 Thanks again for your help.

Hope you all had a nice xmas.

 Sincerely,

 Marcia

          | Here is the latest-
I decided to shutdown my router for about 20 minutes, then restarted, turned on my kanotix machine. I then opened up a terminal, did ifconfig lan0, dhclient, that did not get me on. Then in the terminal I did ifup lan0, dhclent lan0 and that worked. I am now on. I hope this keeps on working.

I am happy it is working now at least. Any ideas or suggestions are still welcome. Thanks for your help.

 Sincerely,

 Marcia

Will reset your interfaces, you should not have got 4 entries for dhcp, only 1!

          | Even I, the network noob, wondered why so many entries.
 I will try this.

Thank you very much for the fix.
