Post subject: How do I get new update / upgrade for Iceweasel?  PostPosted: Jun 14, 2009 - 05:59 PM

I am using Kanotix Thorhammer RC7 and it comes with GTK+ 2.8 and the Iceweasel 'personna' of Firefox v2.0 ... I need to get the v3.0 of Firefox but Iceweasel does not allow updates / upgrades (I've looked into the "About:Config" and it is locked against changes).

When I downloaded Firefox 3.0 (and 3.5b99) and try to load it (via terminal, in the Firefox directory), it tells me:

Quote:
We're sorry, this application requires a version of the GTK+ library that is not installed on your computer.

You have GTK+ 2.8.
This application requires GTK+ 2.10 or newer.

Please upgrade your GTK+ library if you wish to use this application.

How can I update / upgrade either or both (preferably both)? Geschockt

Thanks,

And there is no other 'answer'? The reason I ask is this version of Iceweasel/Firefox 2.0 will not allow (properly) an install of Flash or other necessary add-ons so I can view webpages correctly. I've tried using Wine (the version available to Kanotix through Synaptic Package Manager &/or apt-get) to install Firefox 3.x and, though it works, it seems to lock up every now and again (my whole laptop locks up)!

Thanks,
QBall

Hey qball2u,

this is the right answer Smilie

The Etch-based "Thorhammer" is out, the Lenny-based "Excalibur" is coming. Sehr glücklich
It makes no sense to update Firefox in Thorhammer or things like this.
Lenny has iceweasel 3.0.6
For flash ask the bot in IRC
Code:
!flash
or the people there Winken

The link to download "Kanotix-Excalibur" is still hidden, because Kano wants calmly do some final things.
You can get the link from Kano himself on IRC.

Don't be afraid that "Excalibur" isn't stable, there is a lot of feedback in the German part of the forums and it works just fine Smilie

Hey Daddy-G!

Thanks for the "right answer"! I did go to IRC and asked but received no answer!? Geschockt

I _would_ like to get the newest version of Kanotix! It has remained stable (on my old IBM Thinkpad laptop) whereas other distro's have not! I used some others for less than a month before they crashed in some form or the other but I've had Kanotix up and going since May of this year and other than a few software problems (unrelated to Kanotix itself), I have NO complaints what-so-ever!!!! Sehr glücklich Better yet, I have commendations galore for it!!!!!!! Winken

Any idea as to when the Excalibur edition will be available? I'd hate to bother Kano if he's still working on getting some 'kinks' out of it (or adding more cool, great stuff to it)!? Winken

Thanks again,
QBall

I think, just some days. As far as I know, Excalibour itself is ready, only the installer (made by acritox) needs some polish...

Hi
no problem

Join IRC (with your nickname here) and have a look, if Kano is there (normally every day some hours in afternoon or evening)

He will give you the link and you can ask for information you need.

You only will bother Kano, when asking for Release date Winken
(Release will be, when it's finished, there is no deadline).

Thanks to you both ... if it is just a matter of (a few?) days, then I'll just wait for the release of his newest edition and not bother him ... I do not know (modern-day programming languages ... I _used_ to know some BASIC) programming but I do know that it takes time to get things right (or even close enough)! Winken

Until then, I'll just keep using Firefox 3.0 through Wine and grit my teeth when I cannot see the images or flash 'movies' loading fast enough (or at all)! :/

Thanks again,
QBall
