Having used kanotix for years before the split to sidux I am now disapointed with sidux the atmosphere on the forum is bad and I am looking for a more friendly distro. But what is the future of kanotix where has kano been for the last two years should I try kanotix or just go with Debian.

Hi titan,

looks like you are right here Winken
I started with Kanotix nearly 2 years ago and i am fine with the work of Kano and the community. By the way, he was never gone. You can meet him almost every day in IRC.
I think you should try Kanotix Excalibur it works, it's stable and everybody in forum or IRC is friendly.

TheOne

PS: beside the official ISO's you can get more if you ask Kano in IRC (e.g Kanotix with KDE4)

Welcome back Titan to Kanotix - livelier since long time !
Same as you I returned back to Kanotix few days ago, and I am impressed about this Forum-Team and Kano, always busy to support everybody.

It's a pleasure to install, play and use the current Kanotix Distribution Excalibur ..

Dear all,
just to say to titan: "I am in the same boat" truly disappointed mainly from the attitude of sidux old friends/dev (starting from smxi fiasco and going on and on and on... )

Cheers!

Dear ockham23,
thanks a lot for your "Welcome" but in case of me not "back". I was always monitoring kanotix forum all these years (starting from 2004!)

That doesn't surprise me a bit. Before the split I was attacked and insulted by the "Sidux people" because I dared to have a different opinion (basically I didn't agree that using Debian Sid is such a good idea).
Besides I have tried their distro a few times and I have been less than enthusiastic. Rather Debian Proper by a long shot.

I used Kanotix before the split as well
I was surprised to find action again ( I actually thought it would be a dead link from knoppix )

I am curious is kanotix still a bleeding edge distro with more updates all the time or is it looking to be a stable type system?
How long is it going to support kde3.5?
Kde4 so far is a mistake and I have never liked ubuntu so I was starting to look at other desktops when I landed here.
Do you know if it has support for the af9015 dvb dongles?

Good luck guys

Dave

hi spottyrover,

Kanotix based on Debian stable with all stable security updates and wise backports included by Kano. Because Debian stable Kanotix uses KDE3.5 and with Squeeze it will get KDE4.

I do not have an af9015 dvb dongle but there is default a firmware onboard under /lib/firmware/dvb-usb-af9015.fw so i guess it is well supported - try it yourself Winken
(if it doesn't work and you need help, feel free to visit the IRC and ask us or Kano directly)

I still browse this forum a lot, and for a while thought Kanotix was pretty much dead until Thorhammer went live. Now I got to try Hellfire and it works quite well so nice work Kanotix team Smilie

Updated my 64M 4G pc SuSe to Kanotix from free CD in PC Praxis 06/05. Ran slowly on KDE, usable on icewm. End of 2008 hd began giving up, transferred system to USB, with PLOP and chroot, just about usable. Looked up Kanotix site, was moribund. 2010 finances allowed getting 1G 250G m/c without o/s, just few days ago acquired DSL, been browsing distro sites to update to an all bells and whistles distro.

Thought Kanotix was defunct was considering Ubuntu etc., but yesterday happened to click an old Kanotix bookmark button and was pleasantly surprised to find a very much alive Kanotix. So, my question is whether the sentiments expressed in the topic "Why was Kanotix created?" still hold?

P.S. Incidentally after registering I kept on waiting and waiting for an email with a password, which never came Mit den Augen rollen

Welcome Tejas,

I am happy that you rediscover Kanotix! I hope you enjoy it.

Towards your question, I haven't got a clue what article/topic or what ever you read about. Here is our latest project description, we made for the upcoming LinuxTag 2011.

Quote:
The Kanotix project was founded by the developer Jörg Schirottke (Kano) in December 2003 as Knoppix derivative. The former base was Debian unstable. Since the Thorhammer releases in the year 2007 the base is Debian stable together with an Ubuntu kernel. Kanotix can be used as KDE-live-system or as hard drive installation on 32 or 64 bit systems. Several scripts help users for casual tasks like installing binary graphic drivers or Flash. By using backports the user can use an up-to-date software application selection on top of a stable base system. The Kanotix package selection is optimized for office, internet and multimedia and provides an instant usable system for common tasks.

Did you receive an Email about your forum registration in the meanwhile?

Cheers, TheOne

No, but seems to be irrelevant, regarding forum participation.
